Ferguson Ruled Out Champions Trophy, Jamieson To Replace
BLACKCAPS fast bowler Lockie Ferguson has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to a foot injury.
Ferguson experienced discomfort in his right foot after bowling a spell during an informal warm-up match against Afghanistan in Karachi on Sunday. An initial medical assessment determined he would be unable to participate in the entire tournament.
With the Champions Trophy set to begin soon and given its short duration, the decision was made to send Ferguson home for rehabilitation.
Canterbury Kings fast bowler Kyle Jamieson has been named as Ferguson’s replacement and will depart for Pakistan this evening.
Jamieson returned to domestic cricket in December for the Canterbury Kings in the Dream11 Super Smash after spending 10 months recovering from a stress fracture in his back. He played a key role in Canterbury’s journey to the Grand Final, finishing as the tournament’s joint second-leading wicket-taker with 14 wickets, including a standout performance of 4-12 against the Central Stags at Hagley Oval.
He also featured in Canterbury’s recent Ford Trophy matches, playing against the Central Stags in Round 8 and contributing to a Round 9 victory over Northern Districts in Hamilton.
BLACKCAPS head coach Gary Stead expressed disappointment over Ferguson’s injury.
“We’re really disappointed for Lockie,” Stead said. “He’s a crucial part of our bowling attack and has a wealth of experience in major tournaments. We know how much he was looking forward to representing New Zealand in this event. We wish him a smooth recovery and hope to see him back in action soon.”
Stead highlighted Jamieson’s suitability as a replacement, emphasizing his attributes as a fast bowler.
“Kyle brings pace and extra bounce, which will be beneficial in Pakistan’s conditions,” he said. “Since returning in the Dream11 Super Smash, he has shown his effectiveness in shorter formats, bowling with great pace and energy—qualities essential for a pace bowler in a major tournament.
“We’re pleased with his progress and believe his recent workload, along with his strong performances in the Ford Trophy, have him well-prepared if called upon during the tournament.”
The BLACKCAPS will kick off their Champions Trophy campaign in the tournament opener against hosts Pakistan in Karachi tomorrow at 2 PM.
