PAF’s spectacular aerial display captivates spectators ahead of the Champions Trophy opener
The ICC Champions Trophy opening ceremony in Karachi kicked off with a thrilling aerobatic display by the Pakistan Air Force’s (PAF) Sherdil Squadron.
Ahead of the much-anticipated match between Pakistan and New Zealand at the National Bank Stadium, spectators were treated to a breathtaking flypast—the standout moment of the ceremony. This marked the return of the PAF aerobatic display to Karachi after five years.
The Sherdil Squadron, meaning “lion-hearted” in Urdu, showcased their precision and skill with Karakoram-8 aircraft, executing intricate maneuvers such as barrel rolls, loops, and bomb bursts with vibrant smoke trails. The spectacle was further elevated by the participation of Pakistan-made JF-17 Thunder and F-16 fighter jets, leaving the audience in awe.
President Asif Ali Zardari, the chief guest, attended the ceremony alongside Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
To ensure a smooth and secure flypast, a designated air corridor was temporarily closed from 2:30 pm to 3:00 pm, with rehearsals conducted from February 17 to 19. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) to regulate air traffic, advising commercial flights arriving at Karachi Airport to carry extra fuel and take necessary precautions.
This was the first-ever PAF flypast at a Champions Trophy opening ceremony, adding an unforgettable spectacle to the tournament’s kickoff.
